With the release of their third studio album, ‘Repetition Compulsion’, London post-punk trio Black Doldrums complete their interconnected “State of Mind Trilogy”: a three-album exploration of the psychological forces that shape identity, memory and human connection, which began with their 2022 debut, ‘Dead Awake’, and most recently, 2024’s ‘In Limerence’. At the heart of it all is the creative and personal partnership between founding members Kevin Gibbard and Sophie Landers, whose relationship forms both the emotional foundation of the record and the lens through which its themes are explored. As Gibbard explains: “The songs are either about Sophie, for Sophie, or inspired by her.”

Taking its title from the psychological concept first explored by Freud, ‘Repetition Compulsion’ examines “the unconscious tendency to recreate familiar emotional patterns, destructive behaviours and inherited cycles from the past.” Across its eleven tracks, Black Doldrums explore how these repetitions shape intimate relationships, collective memory, politics and mental wellbeing, creating a record that feels both deeply personal and quietly universal. Through evocative songwriting and cinematic production, Gibbard says “the album invites listeners to confront the echoes of the past while questioning whether those patterns can ever truly be broken.”

Drawing inspiration from 80s gothic post-punk, synth-pop and darkwave, alongside the atmospheric film scores of John Carpenter and Vangelis, the London trio build on the emotional and sonic foundations of these influences to create something cinematic, modern and unmistakably their own. Every song on ‘Repetition Compulsion’ has been crafted with intention, balancing darkness with beauty to create an intensely personal listening experience rich in melody, atmosphere and emotional depth.

Layers of analogue synths, chorus-soaked guitars and driving rhythms frame songs that are intimate, immersive and emotionally precise, while the album’s expansive production gives each composition a striking sense of scale. Rather than relying on nostalgia, ‘Repetition Compulsion’ presents post-punk as a living, evolving form, embracing atmosphere without sacrificing melody, introspection without losing momentum, and darkness without abandoning hope.

Rich in detail, artistic ambition and emotional weight, ‘Repetition Compulsion’ is Black Doldrums’ most fully realised work to date. Bringing the “State of Mind Trilogy” to a compelling close while confidently signalling the beginning of a new chapter, the album further establishes Black Doldrums as one of London’s most distinctive voices in modern post-punk and the dark alternative underground. Arriving off the back of heavy UK and European touring over the last couple of years, ‘Repetition Compulsion’ is released into the world on November 13th 2026 through London-based independent Fuzz Club.
